The Toyota Prado and Fortuner remain Kenya's default premium family SUVs. On paper they are close. In real ownership they are very different.
## Price
A clean 2018 Prado TX-L imports at KES 6.2M — 7.4M landed. A 2020 Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 lands at KES 5.4M — 6.1M.
## Running costs
Prado diesel: 8.5 km/l average, service KES 22,000 every 10,000 km.
Fortuner: 10.2 km/l average, service KES 18,000 every 10,000 km.
## Reliability
Both are Toyota-tough. The Prado's 1KD-FTV is a known quantity — injector service at 150,000 km, otherwise bulletproof. The Fortuner's newer 1GD-FTV is smoother but has had DPF regen issues on short-cycle urban duty.
## Resale
Prado holds value like nothing else in the segment — expect only 12–15% depreciation over three years of clean ownership. Fortuner depreciates 18–22%.
## Which one
If you keep cars long, buy the Prado. If you rotate every 2–3 years, the Fortuner gets you 90% of the experience for materially less capital.
