The G-Wagon has become the unofficial trophy of Nairobi's new money crowd — but behind the boxy silhouette lies a serious question: does it actually make sense to own one in Kenya? ## Purchase price and taxes A 2019 AMG G63 imported through Arcana X Motors lands in Nairobi at roughly KES 32M — 42M once duty, VAT, IDF and RDL are settled. Newer 2022+ examples push past KES 55M. ## Running costs Expect 5–7 km/l around town from the 4.0L twin-turbo V8. Service intervals at authorised Mercedes-Benz centres run KES 180,000 — 350,000 depending on wear items. Tyres alone are KES 90,000 per corner. ## Ride and Kenyan roads Surprisingly compliant. The air suspension eats Nairobi speed bumps at slow speeds, and the ladder frame shrugs off Karen dirt roads. The turning circle, though, is comedy — parking at Two Rivers is a full three-point manoeuvre. ## Resale This is where the G shines. A well-kept G63 loses less than 8% in the first two years — one of the best value-retention numbers of any luxury SUV in Kenya. ## The verdict If you want a statement, there is nothing like it. If you want value, a Range Rover Sport SVR or Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT does 80% of the job for 60% of the cost. But nothing else makes the same entrance.
